  • Use the Mattock when your shovel just isn't cutting it.
  • If you have extremely rocky soil or hard clay, use the "pick" end to cut through the soil and scoop away the loose stuff with a shovel.
  • Planting under trees? The flat blade can cut through those small surface roots. That's what you need to get an area big enough for a planting hole.
  • For transplanting or removing: This is the tool that will help you cut around the drip line of the plant and loosen the roots.
  • Use the pick side to get under the roots and pull them up. The blade is useful for cutting or chopping bigger roots free.
  • For edging and making new planning beds:
  • For small patches of sod, use the blade to chop away the lawn. The flat edge gets right under the roots and peels up the grass.
  • Once the bed is cleared of sod, use the pick to pull up any rocks and roots that need to be cut away.
  • This is also a great tool for cutting into small hillsides and removing soil before you tackle retaining walls.
